ANTONIO MARGARITO could meet
JOSHUA CLOHEY in a rematch on
November 1 at the Honda Center in
Anaheim, California. MargarHo is
the WBA welter champ after
stopping Miguel Cotto in July, while
Clottey picked up the IBF belt
Margarito had vacated, by beating
Zab Judah on a technical decision
the following week.
Bob Arum has floated the idea
as a Showtime pay-per-view and, if
it comes off, the bill could feature
a rematch between JULIO CESAR
CHAVEZ JNR and MAH VANDA, plus
NONITO DONAIRE defending his IBF
flyweight belt against South African
mandatory MORUTI MTHALANE.
Chavez beat Vanda on a
controversial split decision in April
while Margarito outpointed Clottey,
who broke his hand early on, in
2006.
FRANK WARREN won his libel
battle with publishers Random
House over Ricky Nation's
autobiography: The Hitman, My
Story.
Random House settled out of
court, paying Warren £115,000
in damages in addition to the
promoter's legal costs following
defamatory allegations.
The book alleged Warren had
conned Vince Phillips into
accepting a pitiful fee by lying
about the sale of US TV rights. It
also alleged that Warren had
pressured Hatton into fighting
Carlos Vilches while knowing Ricky
was allegedly unfit.
The final allegation claimed
Warren had lied to the News of the
World by saying Hatton had earned
£6m whilst being managed by him.
Hatton said in the book he earned
"nowhere near" that amount.
Warren said he'd sent Random
House a breakdown of his
payments to Hatton in October
2006. A trial date was set for
December 1, but Random House
instead opted to settle. He said the
publishers had also apologised to
him in open court last October for
the Phillips allegation.
"This legal fight has cost
Random House millions," said
Warren. "1 am mystified by their
behaviour."
MATTHEW MARSH has pulled out of
his September 26 British super-bantam
title defence against Thetford's Rocky
Dean, who he has beaten twice
previously.
Marsh recently came back from
holiday, having picked up a virus and
made the sensible decision, along with
trainer Johnny Eames, to withdraw.
If Sports Network's York Hall bill is
now scrapped, this could open the way
for Frank Maloney's Wigan bill, set for
the same night and featuring Jamie
Moore's European title challenge, to
become the live Sky fight.
"I'm gutted," said Marsh. "But I had
to do what's best for my health. I'm on
medication and getting better slowly.
"I hope I'm back to fight Dean soon
but my main aim is to fight [Kendall]
Munroe. Johnny said we'd have a few
more fights, then go for him. I reckon I
could beat him but it'd be a hard fight."
THERE was a tumultuous welcome at
Dublin Airport for Ireland's five-man
Olympic team, with a silver medal win
for light-heavy Kenneth Egan and
bronzes for middle Darren Sutherland
and light-fly Paddy Barnes.
