JAMES DEGALE, Britain's Olympic
middleweight champion, is on the
verge of turning pro, while Beijing
2008 team-mate Billy Joe Saunders, a
welter, has already made his mind up
and hopes to debut in February.
DeGale is frustrated by the lack of a
firm plan for his future from the BABA,
who are in charge of the elite boxers
leading into the 2012 London Games.
"I haven't signed anything yet but
I'm nearly there," said the Harlesden •
southpaw. "The ABA keep promising
me a meeting and I haven't had it. My
future is on hold because of them. I'm
speaking to Frank Warren and these
are exciting times.

AFTER much to-ing and fro-ing,
ANTONIO MARGARITO will defend
his WBA welterweight crown
against veteran SHANE MOSLEY on
January 24. Venue for this Top
Rank-promoted show is the
Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas
and HBO televise live.
After it was reported that
Margarito had turned down the
fight due to the purse not meeting
his expectations, HBO reportedly
put more money into the pot, thus
increasing the Mexican's share.
If successful, next for the
"Tijuana Tornado" could be a June
rematch with MIGUEL COTTO,
whom Margarito stopped in the
11th of a thriller last July.
Cotto is expected to next box
Britain's MICHAEL JENNINGS for
the vacant WBO belt, or Mexican
Jesus Soto Harass.

TOBY GIBSON, last seen
on the big Hatton-Malignaggi
bill refereeing Matthew Hatton's
figlit with Ben Jackie [above], tragically
committed suicide this weeii.
The Nevada State Athletic
Commission confirmed the news.
Gibson was apparently found by his
wife in the garage of his Las Vegas
home.
Gibson had been a referee
around the world for over 20 years
- handling at least 17 world title
fights according to boxrec - but
had recently been laid off from his
job with the Nevada Department of
Forestry. He had been training to
referee mixed martial arts bouts.
Gibson will be sadly missed.
Gibson isn't the first Nevada
referee to take his own life. Mitch
Halpern committed suicide in 2000,
as did Richard Green, referee of
Larry Holmes-Muhammad AM, in
1983.
Halpern was 33 and Green 46.
Gibson was 61.

BRITAIN'S Olympic light-welterweight
rep Bradley Saunders has been arrested
on suspicion of being concerned in the
supply of Class A drugs.
Police raided his property in
Sedgefield, County Durham on Monday
and found a white powder believed to
be cocaine with a £12,000 street value.
Saunders' girlfriend was also arrested
and the pair have both been bailed
pending further enquiries.
