IVIAn SKELTON has withdrawn from
iiis vacant European lieavyweight
title fight against SINAN SAMIL
SAM, set for Istanbul on July 4,
with a virus.
Manager Kevin Sanders informed
the Board immediately and he says
they told him they would safeguard
Matt's position.
Arena, who promote the July 4
show, say that Samii Sam will fight
Italy's former champion PAOLO
VIDOZ for the belt, as the only
higher-rated contender is
Alex Dimitrenko, who rivals
Universum say is unavailable.
Arena have no agreement for
Skelton to box the winner, but the
EBU may enforce this. The show is
still stacked, as Odianier Soils
takes on Francois Botha and
HERBIE HIDE makes the third
defence of his WBC International
cruiser belt, against Swiss-based
Albanian NURI SEFERI, 21-5 115).

EVEN though MANNY PACQUIAO
has first to defeat DAVID DIAZ
for the WBC lightweight title in
Las Vegas on June 28, there's been
much speculation that the Filipino
will fight later this year in Macau.
In fact, talk of a Pacquiao fight
in Macau has been ongoing for
more than a year.
The logical fight was for Pacquiao
to face WBA super-featherweight
champ EDWIN VALERO, a wild,
hard-hitting southpaw like Manny.
Valero, from Venezuela, is based
in Japan.
But it was confirmed that any
Pacquiao-Valero match would not
be happening in Macau.
The reason for the cancellation
is that promoter Bob Arum said he
would require pay-per-view TV to
make it work, but at 10am local
time (for US TV| that wasn't going
to lure the audience he needed.
But Arum said he hasn't given
up on staging a fight in Macau.
He said he's working on a big event
- three title fights - involving
at least two Filipinos, possibly
Z GORRES against FERNANDO
MONTIEL in a rematch.

BERNARD DUNNE continues on the
road back from his one-round
hammering by Kiko Martinez, when
he headlines at the National
Stadium, Dublin on July 12.
Dunne's opponent for this Brian
Peters show has yet to be
confirmed but it appears the frontrunner
is 24-year-old Dominican
MARCOS JIMENEZ, 13-1 18).
Jimenez' only loss is by stoppage
to Mexican journeyman Edei Ruiz.
The undercard sees JIM ROCK
taking on JONJO FINNEGAN for the
vacant Irish light-heavy title, and
PETER McDONAGH, who is based
in Bermondsey, challenging for
ANDREW MURRAY'S Irish
lightweight title.

WESTERN COUNTIES welterweight
champion and ABA semi-finahst Adam
Grigg oupointed Mark Coombes on a
Salisbury ABC at the Raymond
McEnhill Stadium, where Salisbury City
FC play their conference matches.
Grigg had unanimously outscored
Portsmouth University boxer Coombes
three weeks earlier, in Portsmouth, and
the outcome was the same this time.
It was a superb night for the
Salisbury team, with six of seven boxers
registering victories.
Faz McVey opened proceedings in
the juniors by beating Reggie Smith of
Lymington's Lawrence Boxing Club via
majority decision. Dan McDixon then
stopped Eastleigh's Harry Beattie in
the third as the towel came in and Liam
Wilkins outpointed Ryan Belcher
f r om the Empire Club, j
Golden Ring's James Whitlock beat
Empire's T im Cutler via majority decision
but another Golden Ring fighter,
Dan Harkins, came unstuck against
Lydney's Andy Rowbottom.
But the Southampton club returned
to winning ways when Tommy Watts
edged Newport's Matt Newton via
split decision before Salisbury's Matt
Dyba delighted the home crowd with
victory over Cleeve's Damien
Dinwiddy and promising Ben Copsey
defeated Oakmead's Ben Billam-Smith
by a majority decision.
"It was a superb night for the club,"
said Salisbury ABC trainer Ray Sparrow.
"There were several good fights that
could have gone either way with close
decisions but the show was wellsupported."
