FLOYD MAYWEATHER JNR helps
organise a three-day celebration,
partly to mark his retirement from
boxing, in his hometown of Grand
Rapids, Michigan, this July 4
(American Independence Day)
weekend.
The event is in two parts with
an entertainment aspect, including
concerts and a film premiere, in
the evenings, managed by
Mayweather's music promotions
company.
The daytime feature of the
weekend is a carnival of community
activities - mostly free - which will
be sponsored by the Floyd
Mayweather Foundation.

SEPTEMBER 13 should be a great
night for boxing in general, and the
lightweight division in particular.
It looits liite WBO/WBA/IBF
champion NATE CAMPBELL will
malte his first defence against WBO
mandatory, and former undefeated
WBO boss at super-feather, unbeaten
Dominican JOAN GUZMAN.
The Showtime bill looks like
coming about after an internet war
of words between the two fighters,
some of it unsavoury but all of rt
likely to help build interest.
On the same night, but on HBO,
JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ will make
his lightweight debut against crafty
Cuban veteran JOEL CASAMAYOR,
who is fresh (probably the wrong
wordi from that thrilling stoppage
of Michael Katsidis in March.
Casamayor will defend his WBO
interim title and his Ring Magazine
belt in that one. The Golden Boy
show goes on at the MOM Grand
Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Campbell said: "Manny [Pacquiao]
has done his thing, now it's my turn
to do it against Guzman."

HOT Cuban prospect YURIORKIS
GAMBOA faces 36-year-old
Venezuelan JOSE ROJAS, 25-6-1
(17) over 10 rounds at Buffalo
Bill's Star Arena in Primm, Nevada,
on July 18. ESPN2 televise.
Southpaw Rojas has been
stopped only once (in 20011 and
took WBA feather ruler Chris John
the distance last year, though it
appears the Gamboa fight will
be at super-feather.

JOHN RYDER made a winning
r e t u r n when he topped the bill on
his Angel s h ow (staged jointly with
Finchley) at the Bostondome in
Tufnell Park on May 29.
Boxing for t h e first time since
losing in the ABAs t o George Groves
- reigning and eventual middleweight
champion - southpaw Ryder
unanimously outpointed Honor Oak's
Diego B u r t o n over 4 x 2s.
"He was cautious early on, as is
always t h e way when a boxer has lost
one," said Angel president John Jacobs.
"Ryder was cagey but covered up
well for t h e first half of r o u n d one.
And once he'd got his confidence
back, h e did very well and won the
bout clearly."
In t h e last year Ryder has won two
Novice titles (Classes A and B) but
remains difficult to match.
Angel's partnership with Finchley
has worked so well this season they
will stage six shows next term.
"This one had a packed audience,"
said a delighted Jacobs. "It was oldtime
boxing, taking it back t o the
grass roots. It was like the old days at
Caledonian Baths o r Shoreditch Town
Hall."
Jacobs, w h o has been unwell
recently, wanted t o t h a n k all t h e wellwishers
w h o enquired after his health.
He assures t h em he is battling on.
The Angel club has just undergone
a repaint and is open for n ew
members, b o t h junior and senior.
