ESS than a month ahead of his
WBA heavyweight title fight with
JOHN RUIZ, 7ft Russian NIKOLAI
VALUEV has penned a new threeyear
deal with German promoters
Sauerland Event.
He fights Ruiz in a rematch on
August 30 in Berlin.
Sauerland's managing director
Chris Meyer is delighted.
"Nikolai's signature is a very
important part of our future plans.
Everybody was convinced that it
would be best to sign the contract
before the next fight. For us it was
important to show Nikolai that he
has our full backing.
"The axis between St.
Petersburg [where Valuev is from],
Berlin [Sauerland HQ] and Fort
Lauderdale [where Don King copromotes]
will remain alive."
On the same bill, German-based
Cuban cruiser YOAN PABLO
HERNANDEZ returns after his first
loss to take on Marcos Hernandez.

FORMER IBF super-featherweight
champion Carlos H e r n a n d e z returns
for his first fight since losing to
another oldie, Kevin Kelley, two
years ago.
"El Famoso", w h o has gone 12
rounds with b o t h Erik Morales and
Floyd Mayweather Jnr and beaten the
likes of David Santos, Justin Juuko
and Steve Forbes, has little left a f t er
a h a r d 50-flght career (42-7-1).
Before walking away in 2006 he
had lost four of six and hadn't stopped
anyone since 2003.
He's 37 now, 11 years older than
his opponent at Chicago's Aragon
Ballroom tonight (Friday, August 15),
H e c t o r Alatorre.
However, Alatorre has never been
in w i t h anyone as experienced as
Hernandez in compiling a 15-4 (5)
record, so t h e tip is Hernandez on
points in a gruelling and ugly scrap.

After the withdrawal of World lightweight
champion Frankie Gavin, it was
important for Great Britain to make a
good start - and James DeGale did the
necessary.
The Dale Youth boxer comfortably
outpointed Egypt's Mohamed Hikal
13-4 and now boxes Shawn Estrada
of the USA in the last 16 tomorrow
(Saturday August 16).
Hikal, a World bronze medallist in
2005, was shorter so tried to come
forward. DeGale, who is listed as a
southpaw but boxed orthodox, showed
good footwork to leave Hikal reaching
with his punches and fast hands to pick
him off steadily.
