CARL GREAVES, trainer and
manager of recently deposed
British super-bantam boss Esham
Pickering, says there is no way his
charge is shot.
"He simply fought the wrong
fight [against Matthew Marsh],"
said Greaves. "The plan was for
Esham to use his boxing skills and
his main attribute, his footwork,
and he decided to have a fight
instead. He didn't land cleanly the
whole fight but I've got no doubt he
can turn things round again.
"We just need the opportunities.
Hopefully Sports Network will be
interested in an immediate rematch
or we can look at the
Commonwealth or English titles.
We know it'll be a long, hard road
back but I know Esham's not a shot
fighter."

s c o n GAIVIMER'S vacant EU
heavyweight title fight against
Germany-based Italian Francesco
Pianeta has been postponed. A
problem with TV dates in Germany,
where the fight is being held,
meant the July 19 contest has been
pushed all the way back to August
30.
Gammer's manager Paul Boyce
says his charge is looking sharp.
"We won't know how good he is
until we get in the ring," he
admitted.
"But he's looking good and his
hands have always been fast. He
can ease off now and pick it up
again when he's ready."

RUSLAN CHAGAEV-had successful
surgery to repair a snapped Achilles
tendon on his left leg and faces a slow
recovery.
The WBA heavyweight champion,
who had to pull out of a scheduled
rematch against Nikolai Valuev, for the
second time, last weekend in Halle, is
optimistic he will fight again before the
year is out.
Chagaev has been named the WBA
heavyweight "champion in recess"
thus allowing Valuev and John Ruiz,
who have fought before, to dispute the
vacant title later this year.
Promoters have until July 15 to
come to an agreement or purse bids
will be called. The fight must happen
by August 31.
In their first fight, Valuev defeated
Ruiz to win the WBA belt on a majority
decision in 2005. To complete the
triangle, Ruiz has also lost a split decision
to Chagaev.
Chagaev must face the winner of
Valuev-Ruiz II by June 26, 2009.

EASTERN Counties lightwelterweight
champion Joe Payne
boxed on hisTiome Chatteris show
and outpointed Billy Crotty

to action a f t e r losing t o soldier

at Sheffield in late April.
