RICKY HATTON'S next fight looks
as though it will be against German
Oktay Urkal, his mandatory WBA
welterweight title challenger.
The two camps did reach a verbal
agreement for the fight to take place
later this year following Hatton's win
against Luis Collazo in Boston last
month.
Although Hatton seemed to find it
tough at welter, Urkal is a former
light-welter and therefore unlikely to
pose the same problems as Collazo,
who was also southpaw.
Hatton-Urkal also looks as if it will
be televised in the US by HBO, who
have a three-fight deal with the
Manchester man that includes the
option of one bout taking place in
Europe.
OSCAR DE LA HOYA this week told
Kevin lole of the Las Vegas Review Journal
that if he fights again, it would be
against Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
The Golden Boy, brilliant smashing
Ricardo Mayorga to defeat last month,
didn't answer how he would handle the
tricky situation of Floyd's dad being his
trainer.
"I have to look at whether I could
have a good performance against Floyd
Jnr," he said. "I'm on a high right now.
Would I be in that position again after
fighting Floyd Jnr? The possibility of
losing is obviously there. I have a lot of
things to think about."
WBC light-heavyweight champ
TOMASZ ADAMEK of Poland, that
oi^anisation's boxer of the year for
2005, could be stripped for failing
to honour his mandatory obligations.
The WBC have sent Adamek a
final warning. His mandatory
challenger is Aussie PAUL BRiGGS,
whom he beat for the title by
majority decision in a thriller last
May. Adamek has boxed just once
since, knocking out German
Thomas Uirich in October.
The last we heard Adamek was
in dispute with promoter Don King
over a lack of work.
BIRTLEY stars Gary Barr and Jon-
Lewis Dickinson were in winning
action when their club staged a dinner
show at the Lancastrian Suite, Dunston
on May 5.
England rep Barr earned a majority
vote over Ireland's David Joyce
(Moate), while ABA finalist Dickinson
unanimously beat Yarmouth's Richard
Beck (Kingfisher).
Beck's clubmate Mark Redhead
had at one time been mooted to have
a rematch with Barr on this bill. Gary
has since been picked for July's
European Championships.
Ben Murphy and Lloyd Ellett
travelled all the way from the South
Coast to beat Birtley opponents at
light-welterweight.
