Fighters murdered
TWO fighters were killed this week.
In Copenhagen last Saturday TUE
BJORN THOMSEN was stabbed to
death in a pub. And in Philadelphia
the previous day WILLIAM BOGGS
died in a shooting.
Thomsen, 33, hadn't boxed since
October 2002. He had lost only
once in 24 fights (one drawl and
held the IBC super-cruiserweight
title. As an amateur he had won a
World bronze in 1997.
Boggs was only 19 but had a
promising career ahead of him.
He was a National Golden Gloves
finalist last year and undefeated in
three professional fights (all wins).

LEE HASKINS and DALE ROBINSON
are to box for the vacant British
flyweight title.
Robinson's trainer Chris Aston
said he had received an offer from
Chris Sanigar.
"We're looking at it," he said.
"Dale's ready to fight Haskins in
a month if they want it."
If it takes longer to put together
and time permits, Aston said he'd
like to keep Robinson busy in the
interim with the Haskins match
- also for Lee's Commonwealth
belt - going on before the summer.

A FINE night was enjoyed by all when
Spennymoor Boxing Academy staged
their annual dinner promotion at the
Leisure Centre.
Paul Hodgson made 12 matches, all
but one going the distance. The hosts
had a boxer in every bout, winning eight.
That includes three seniors who, if
they knocked any louder on England's
door, would burst eardrums: the two
Stueys, McCrone and Hall, plus Gary
Reay. All were involved in 4 x 2s.
Tall middleweight McCrone edged
a close but deserved majority decision
over Galium Johnson of Terry Allen
Unique. Calculator scores: 29-21,14-8,
10-15.

ONGAR ABC's second annual
extravaganza at the International
Centre produced 25 bouts for the 600
or so fans w h o were rewarded with
some good boxing.
It was split into two sessions: juniors
(one female) f r om l-5pm, followed by
mostly seniors f r om 6-8pm.
1 attended the second half and saw
Dagenham's Luke Calvert box smartly
for a unanimous decision over Ian
Hudson (St Mary's) in an open class
welterweight four-twos.
