KID PASCUAUTO, real name Valentin
Galeano, died last weekend aged 64.
Paraguay's former South
American bantam and featlierweigtit
champion had 133 fights in
a 21-year pro career that started in
1957. He fought greats Alexis
Arguelio (I ko 3, 1973) and Ruben
Olivares II rsf 9, 1971), the latter
being his only fight in the US.
Pascualito had Olivares, then
world bantamweight champ, on the
deck before succumbing in their
non-title 10-rounder.
He was a fair puncher, knocking
out or stopping 59 from 85 wins.
He lost 26 and drew 20.
Sadly, he died after years of
poor health and having squandered
much of what he earned.
MARTIN WATSON will defend his
Celtic lightweight belt against
GAVIN REES on the July 8 Cardiff
bill topped by Joe Caizaghe. As we
were going to print, GARY LOCKETT
V RYAN RHODES was added, as was
BRADLEY PRYCE in a defence of his
Commonwealth l i s t belt.
It's going to be big.
RICARDO MAYORGA, destroyed by
Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas earlier
this month, has failed a drugs test. The
Nicaraguan tested positive for banned
diuretic Lasix and will almost certainly
be suspended and fined by the Nevada
State Athletic Commission.
It follows the news that Rosendo
Alvarez, also f r om Nicaragua, tested
positive for the same drug after being
halted by Jorge Arce in April. Alvarez
was fined and suspended until 2007.
MICHAEL MAGUIRE says he won't
be hanging around for the Olympics.
Kettering School of Boxing's star
pupil claimed a magnificent seventh
junior title when he survived a count
in the opener against Lewis Browning
(Exeter) to win their Junior ABA final
(Class 5 52 kgs).
Maguire was decked for the first
time in his career within 30 seconds
when he walked into a left hook. He hit
back to force a count in the second and
a stoppage on the outscored rule.
That secured back-to-back Junior
ABA titles for the 17-year-old, who says
he will t u rn professional next March.
That announcement will interest the
country's leading managers.
