TRAGIC news: former world lightheavyweight
title challenger Mike
Quarry died last Sunday aged 55.
Mike had not been well for some
time and died tragically young and
incapable the way brother Jerry did
in 1999 aged 53.
We had heard for some time that
Mike could hardly spell his name in
the end. Jerry certainly needed help
shaving.
The sad truth is both former golden
boys out of California took too many
punches.
Mike's remaining years were spent
in Los Angeles in what the Americans
call an assisted-living community, or
what we call a nursing home. His sister
Wilma said he died of pugilistic
dementia, "the same as Jerry".
Mike had 82 pro fights and went
on too long, being knocked out in his
second-to-last fight by Britain's Bunny
Johnson in 1981.

ANGEL ABC took four boxers to the
Rosehill show in Purley last Friday
(June 9) but only got one on.
"Our coach took four hours to get
there in the heat," said Angel boss
John Jacobs. "But when we arrived the
opponent from Kent for our John Ryder
had heatstroke, according to his trainer,
and the other two scheduled opponents
for our lads just didn't show."
So Billy Goodrham and John Gallagher
joined Ryder in missing out, but Billy's
brother Thomas Goodrham outpointed
R. Shipley (Hayes) at 32 kgs.
"Both were making their debuts and
Thomas boxed brilliantly to win a
majority," said Jacobs. •
They have a quick return on the
Minors (up to 13 years) show tomorrow
(Saturday June 17, start 2pm) at St
Pancras club gym in Kentish Tovra.
