Houston comeback
bill looks tasty
KEVIN HOUSTON'S comeback
promotion on December 5 at the
Ricoh Arena, home of Coventry City
football club, looks good.
The big dinner show, to celebrate
the King of Thailand's birthday
year, sees former WBA superbantam
champ YODDAMRONG
SITHYODTHONG taking on
locally-based South African
HARRY RAIVIAKGOADI for the
vacant WBF super-feather belt.
Just as strong is a bout between
Coventry's former British featherweight
champ ROY RUTHERFORD
and JACKSON ASIKU for the latter's
Commonwealth crown.
Houston got friendly with Thai
promoters after a visit there some
years ago. The former head of
Capitol Promotions, which folded
after a bright start, had hoped to
match Dean Pithie with then-WBA
super-featherweight king Yodsanan
Nanthachai in 2003.
But then Pithie lost his CommonweaKh
title to Craig Docherty.
Appropriately, Houston says the
three-course dinner being laid on in
December will be English or Thai!

A BELT being billed by Bonhams
the famous auctioneers as the one
worn by MAX SCHMELING when he
became world heavyweight champ
in 1930 is not the original.
Bonhams realised their mistake
last week. They said they would
either remove it or describe it
properly with a much lower asking
price (it was due for auction this
week in Chester).
The give-away was that the belt
had WBA on it, but the WBA was
not in existence then.

H CRYSTAL PAUCE
OBED MBWAKONGO confirmed
the promise of his recent World Junior
bronze medal with a sparkling display
at the South East/South West Divs.
Mbwakongo, still only 17, picked
apart Billy Aird (Honor Oak) for a
stoppage in the fourth and last round
of their straight light-heavy final.
Aird could never get close as the
tall, slim Fisher prospect moved and
speared him. The cumulative effect
wore down Aird, who took a count
late in the third and another in the final
round before a final right cross prompted
referee Jumbo Basi to intervene.
An entry of five at welter produced a
final between Martin Welsh (Fitzroy
Lodge) and Fabrice Mankenda of
Hollington, which had to be held over.
Welsh didn't look sharp for two
rounds of his semi against clubmate
Manus Barber, but boxed his way into
form and landed enough rights for
a majority that should have been
unanimous.
