BRAZILIAN idol Acelino Freitas has
decided to retire.
The heavy-hitting 31-year-old
who rose from poverty in Salvador to
become a two-weight world champ
decided he would concentrate on
promoting f r om now on.
Freitas last boxed in April, when he
outpointed Zahir Raheem over 12 to
regain the WBO lightweight belt he
lost to Diego Corrales in August 2004.
Corrales handed him his only loss in
39 fights, making Freitas t u rn away and
quit in the 10th round.
And though Freitas came back to win
three straight, he will be remembered
for his tame exit against Corrales as
much as for his vaunted power and
exciting knockouts.
Freitas was in line to face IBF champ
Julio Diaz in November and there was
even talk of h im going up against
Ricky Hatton in 2007.

JESUS CHAVEZ could defend his
IBF lightweight belt against interim
holder JULIO DIAZ on November 25.
Chavez (above) is yet to sign but
will be stripped of his title if he
doesn't defend it by December 17.
Also mooted for the bill is
an interesting light-welter match
between Contender runner-up
STEVIE FORBES and DEMETRIUS
HOPKINS. All going well it would
happen at the Dodge Arena in
Hidalgo, Texas.
Forbes has meanwhile signed
for the promotional company
Tournament of Contenders along
with Contender II winner GRADY
BREWER, CORNELIUS BUNDRAGE,
NORBERTO BRAVO, FREDDY
CURIEL, WALTER WRIGHT and
NICK ACEVEDO.

ALAN BOSWORTH now boxes
COLIN LYNES in a 10-round British
light-welterweight title eliminator
at York Hall, Bethnal Green on
October 20.
Bosworth was rejected by
the Boxing Board as a voluntary
challenger for British champion
LENNY DAWS and told to beat
a top-rated contender first.
This he intends to do against
Lynes, with Daws taking on
mandatory challenger BARRY
MORRISON in the main event.
