DAMAGED by the now crippling
demands on the UK's armed forces,
standards at the newly re-named Inter-
Service Championships fluctuated wildly
at the Nelson Barracks Gymnasium.
With the RAF unable to produce a
single competitor, the tourney became
a shoot-out between perpetual team
champions the Army and the hosting
Royal Navy, won by the former.
Yet despite the manpower problems,
the servicemen still produced much for
the customary large crowd to enthuse
over. None more so than cruiserweights
Shaun McDonald and Carl Dilks.

KETTERING School of Boxing's
record-breaking title-holder, 17-yearold
Michael Maguire, marched on
towards his eighth national crown
with a 13-4 points victory over tough
Bradley Evans (Stevenage) on
October 28.
Their NACYP Central East Regional
final (Class B 54 kgs) stole the show at
Desborough Leisure Centre - it could
have graced any national stage.
This bout had everything: skill,
strength, courage, power and, above
all, class.
Joining Michael in the national
quarter-finals against London
tomorrow (Saturday Nov 11) in
Chelmsford will be clubmates Sean
Costello (B/52), Lewis Jones (B/57),
WiUjohn (B/60), BiUy Elliott (B/63),
Del Rogers (C/60) and Jimmy
McCann (C/81).

RUST never sleeps, nor does it
apparently corrode Kendall Holt,
who came back from a 13-month
layoff to whip top South African Isaac
Hlatshwayo of Soweto over 12 rounds
for the NABO light-welterweight title.
(The South African qualified for this
regional belt because four of his last six
bouts had been in the United States).
Holt, of Paterson, New Jersey, suffered
a hamstring injury and then a bruised
right hand, which kept him on the
sidelines and in the wilderness.
