RICARDO TORRES and Henry
Bruseles two victims of probably
the best two light-welterweights in
the Americas meet tomorrow night
(Saturday December 10) in a play-off
final in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Bruseles lost to Floyd Mayweather
in eight admittedly one-sided rounds
in January, but going that far proved
he had decent survival ability if
nothing else.

A FEW weeks past his 21st birthday,
Kevin Mitchell goes for his first pro
title on the big ExCel bill.
He tackles France's Mohamed
Medjadi over 10 rounds for the
vacant IBF Inter-continental
super-featherweight belt.
With 16 wins in as many fights,
11 early, the Dagenham hope is
ready to be let off the leash.
But nobody expects him to
be overmatched when there are
showdowns against the likes of Amir
Khan on the (distant) horizon. That's
not how pro boxing works.

IT WAS a night of shocks,
confirmations and one
tremendous fightback when
the 117th ABA finals were
held at the Conference Centre.
Six of the 11 titles went to the North
West Counties - four to the West Lanes
Division and two to the East.
Winning their third Senior ABA
crowns for the former were Nick
McDonald at bantamweight and
Tony Bellew at heavyweight.
Bellew was joined as champion by
Rotunda clubmate Stephen Smith
(featherweight), while the two East
Lanes crowns went to the Fox club
from Middleton (Manchester) through
surprise packages Anthony Crolla
(light) and Denton Vassell (welter).
Also upsetting the odds was flyweight
Paul Edwards from Liverpool's
Salisbury club, against Stewart
Langley.
With Jamie Cox beating Eddie
Corcoran at light-welterweight, that
meant two champions for London in
middleweight James Degale and superheavy
Derek Chisora.
It was Chisora who pulled off a
remarkable turnaround, coming from
behind to pip Tom Dallas at superheavy.
Cox made up for losing in the final
last season, while light-fly James Fowl
became ABA king after defeat in the last
two finals.
