IN a fight optimistically scheduled for
10-twos, California's Laila Ali ( l i s t 11
1 /2lbs) stopped Sweden's Aasa Sandell
(list 13lbs) at 1-15 of the fifth.
Sandell had taken the fight at short
notice when Ali rejected a Russian
female reportedly because she was
a southpaw.
The tall, blonde Sandell made a tense
start, moving like a green amateur,
though she kept both hands working.
Ali didn't do anything.
MICHAEL SPROTT'S trip to beautiful
Austria proved how difficult it is
for any visiting fighter to win on the
Continent. He was beaten unanimously
by Vladimir Virchis of the Ukraine
in a 12-rouder for the WBO Intercontinental
heavyweight belt.
I had the former British champion
winning clearly at 118-113 but, being
as generous as possible to defending
champion Virchis, reconsidered a few
of the closer rounds and trimmed it
down to 115-113 Sprott.
LOCAL hero James Shelton
(Northampton) didn't disappoint the
sell-out crowd in a cracking bill-topper
at the County Ground.
Last year's ABA Novice Class B
middleweight champion met Declan
Miller (Peacock) when the match
between teams from Northampton
and South East London was all square
at 3-3.
Miller forced behind a long jab but
Shelton was happy to concede ring
centre. James took an earl)' right and
then got down to business. He slipped
shots smartly, countered and belted the
body. He was good value for his points
success, which sealed the match.
Far Cotton juniors Sean McCabe
and Ashley Knowles had given
Northampton a 2-0 lead.
