ROY JONES is pictured on the
front page smiling after
last weekend's WBO/WBA
super-featherweight title
bout in Miami, where
Acelino Freitas retained in a thrilling
battle with Jorge Barrios.
The WBA heavyweight champion might consider
himself a relieved man amidst the recent
unwanted publicity surrounding a positive
steroid test from three years ago for which he
was never admonished.
Welter Anderson
BUCKHAVEN'S Kevin Anderson is definitely a
welterweight, despite being a heavy 11st 1 lb when
beating Paul Mcllwaine at York Hall in April.
"He was announced correctly as 11 st 1 lb," said
father Tom Anderson. "But that was his weight on
the night. The day before he weighed 10st 6
3/4lbs, so made the required weight [welter]
comfortably.
"His opponent Keith Jones never showed up at
the weigh-in, so Kevin didn't fight him.
"I've been reading in Boxing News about
boxers' weights recently and just wanted to make
it clear Kevin wasn't overweight that night. He's
definitely a welterweight." Jones did box on the
bill, against Barry Morrison, another Scottish
welter prospect.
AMIR KHAN of Bury broke
new ground when he
won 60 kilos gold at
the European Cadets
Championships in
Kaunas, Lithuania from August 1-8.
"He was in the form of his life," said
a delighted England team manager
Paul King.
