ACCORDING to the latest bulletin issued by WBC president
Jose Sulaiman, Michael Brodie's clash with tough Korean
Injin Chi will not necessarily be for the vacant featherweight
title.
Brodie gave an excellent display outpointing Argentina's
Juan Cabrera for the vacant IBO crown in Manchester last
month, but Chi for the vacant WBC belt is the match Michael
wants.
Now, though, there is a possibility the WBC will sanction a
Brodie-Chi fight as being only an eliminator or "Interim" title
fight instead of for the championship proper.
It seems this all depends on Marco Antonio Barrera, who
in the past has snubbed the WBC belt but with Oscar De La
Hoya now acting as his promoter may choose to start fighting
for titles again after all.
If Barrera confirms his interest in the WBC belt, it is likely
Brodie - who has hasn't had much luck, what with his superbantamweight
title try against Willie Jorrin ending in a
controversial points loss and Naseem Hamed pulling out a
proposed clash this year - will have to go through both Chi
and the Mexican to become champion.
The title became vacant when Erik Morales indicated he
could no longer make 9st and was moving to super-feather,
where he will probably challenge whoever prevails in San
Antonio on August 12, when Sirimonkol Singmanassuk
defends against Jesus Chavez
First, though, Morales may face old foe Guty Espadas
(presumably at catchweight) in a pay-per-view bout on
October 4. Espadas ran Morales close when they first met, for
the WBC 9st title.

JOE CALZAGHE'S wild,
two-round stoppage
of BYRON MITCHELL
has established him
beyond reasonable
doubt as the best supermiddleweight
in the world.
With the 5,000 fans in the Cardiff
International Arena roaring approval,
the 31 -year-old Welsh southpaw
produced a furious torrent of
punches to overwhelm Mitchell in a
sensational, controversial fight.
Referee Dave Parris' intervention
after two minutes 36 seconds of
round two was heavily criticised
by Showtime, and is worth the
discussion, but the result alone
will have repercussions around the
boxing world.

GARY LOCKETT struggled
horribly in a bitterly disputed
10-round points victory over
MICHAEL MONAGHAN of
Nottingham on the Calzaghe bill.
Lockett (11st 10 1/4lbs) looked listless and
tired and finished with a cut over his left eye.
More importantly, he did get a 97-95 decision
from referee Wynford Jones.
The verdict annoyed Monaghan intensely.
At the final bell he turned confidently to the
official, only to be ignored. He furiously kicked
away his gumshield.
