THE row following the Peter Oboh Neil Simpson
British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight title
fight in Coventry earlier this month is showing no
signs of subsiding.
Simpson's trainer Joe Montague called me this
week in reaction to Dean Powell's comments in my
last column.
"Dean claimed we complained about being
thumbed in the eye 50 times, but where did he get
that from? It's ridiculous."
In fact, it was a quote after the match from cotrainer
Neil Tomlinson.
But added Joe: "I agree with Dean the fight
should have been stopped in the eighth - to
disqualify Oboh!
"As for the referee losing control, I thought Ian
John-Lewis did an excellent job. He was brilliant.
"I'll admit Neil wasn't exactly an innocent party,
but what he did was in retaliation.
"Neil would welcome a rematch at any time and
if Oboh can fight as well as Powell can talk, it
should be some contest."

EFFORTS to make pro boxing legal in Sweden again
increased recently when a parliamentary committee
of one (Ms Britt Wahlberg) said the ban should be lifted.
Ms Wahlberg reported that boxing cannot be
regarded as more commercial than other professional
sports and safety precautions have to be considered.
A parliamentary vote will follow to decide whether
professional boxing can resume.
Incidentally, about a year ago the ban on pro boxing
in Iceland was lifted.

WITH Naseem Hamed having confirmed he will not be boxing on June 7, the HBO date for that
day has been handed to Canadian Arturo Gatti
And if a third fight between Gatti and Micky Ward cannot be arranged, Arturo could box Angel
Manfredy, who in January 1998 stopped the Canadian in the eighth when both were lightweights.
Manfredy boxes puncher Moises Pedroza in a 10-rounder in Little Rock, Arkansas on Monday
(March 31).
Another possible Gatti opponent is new USBA10st champion Michael Stewart. Gatti this week told
the IBF he would not participate in a proposed eliminator against tricky southpaw Sharmba Mitchell.
With Zab Judah and Oktay Urkal also unlikely to be interested, Mitchell could end up boxing Omar
Weis
Main Events, Gatti's promoters, said they could see no sense in facing Mitchell to get a title shot
when he is the biggest attraction in the division.
