UNCERTAIN about whether to
box again, LENNOX LEWIS
has at least decided that if
his career will continue, it
won't be until 2004.
Having requested Vitali Klitschko's left
eye be examined by independent specialists
to determine whether a December 6 rematch
could take place, Lewis has now said he
doesn't feel able to resume training in time to
box before the end of the year.
The news surprised and annoyed Klitschko,
who ran Lewis close in Los Angeles in June
before being stopped on cuts after six rounds.
"It seems to me Lennox is looking for an
easy exit," said Vitali, who may consider
taking an interim bout in case a Lewis return
happens next year.

FORMER Scottish middleweight champion Ian
McKenzie died on July 26. He was 62 and had
suffered a series of heart attacks.
From Ayr, Ian was born on July 22,1941 and
turned pro in September 1961.
He won 11 of his first 12, then in May 1963
outpointed Willie Hart over 10 rounds for the vacant
Scottish 11st 6lbs crown.
Boxing News called it a "thrilling battle" and
reported that Hart's unorthodox stance confused
McKenzie early on and Ian "overcame the obstacle
and fully deserved his award".
It was to prove McKenzie's last victory, for in 10
more pro fights until his last in June 1967 (he did not
box in 1966), Ian managed only one draw. And seven
of those defeats came inside the distance.
His final figures were 12-10-1, with six wins
early. He was buried on July 30.

MATTHEW BARNEY'S
career suffered a
big setback when
he was outscored
over 12 dreadful
rounds by CHARLES ADAMU ~
at York Hall.
The inexperienced Ghanaian, having
only his sixth pro fight according to
the BoxRec website, won the vacant
Commonwealth super-middleweight
title by a 116-114 margin for referee
Terry O'Connor.
It was deserved because Adamu, strong
but crude, at least tried to work while
Barney far too often resorted to holding.
Yet when the Southampton man - the
reigning British 12st champion - got on his
toes and pumped out the jab, he was by
far the better boxer.
Such skills put him in a three-point lead
at the halfway mark for me, but Matthew
could not sustain it. Over the second half
he simply stopped working and was
overhauled by an opponent who kept on
coming, although landed few quality
punches.
