T HERE was something
immensely pitiful but
familiar about the way
EVANDER HOLYFIELD'S
fighting days effectively
reached a conclusion in Las Vegas
last Saturday.
Beaten convincingly by a man (James Toney)
naturally much smaller ought to have convinced
Evander his boxing days were over, but the
veteran former champion still refused to admit it
during his post-fight interview with Showtime's
Jim Gray.
The writing has been on the wall for years,
but now it is spelled out in big, bold capital
letters and Holyfield either cannot or will not
read it.

• CUBAN Diobelys Hurtado is coming back, a year
after losing in the second round against Vivian
Harris for the vacant "WBA light-welterweight title".
Hurtado, now a welterweight and with a new
trainer in Tommy Brunette, said he will never fight
at 10st again.
He claimed he had to lose 30lbs in 30 days to
make weight against Harris after coming back
from a holiday cruise.
"For the last three days I didn't eat or drink
anything," he said. "I was feeling weak. That's
why I lost."
His new trainers have had Hurtado chopping
wood, running up stairs and on a weight-training
programme.
There is no confirmation of when he will fight
next, but a spot on a bill in Minnesota on October
17 is a possibility.
Long-term, Hurtado would like to take on WBC
and WBA champ Ricardo Mayorga in a rematch.
When they first boxed in November 1999, the
bout ended in a technical draw after only two
rounds.

• REMARKING on his experience in Germany last
weekend, Robin Reid's trainer Brian Hughes
praised the local supporters for their behaviour.
"Sometimes I'm embarrassed by what I see in
Britain [referring to how some fans failed to
respect the minute's silence for Ernie Fossey at the
MEN Arena last month].
"But Paul Thomas of Derby was the referee for
Danilo Hauessler-Mads Larsen in Zwickau. They
played the anthems for the boxers and the referee
[as is the tradition on the continent] and everyone
in the crowd showed respect.
"The organisation of the event was fantastic
and the arena packed [about 4,500]."
