MICHAEL NUNN, former 'world' middle and
super-middleweight champion, will learn on
December 16 what punishment he will receive for
his part in conspiring to distribute cocaine in
August 2002.
The once-superbly talented southpaw pleaded
guilty to the offence and was supposed to be
sentenced on October 27, but the process has, for
some reason, been delayed.
Nunn, 40, will probably receive a reduced sentence
for pleading guilty, but the minimum punishment
for such an offence in America is five years behind
bars. The maximum is 40 years and a $2m fine.
DECENT Ellesmere Port super-bantam Lee
Holmes has retired because of work commitments.
Lee, 28, had an injury-marred career and hadn't
boxed at all this year, after being stopped in his last
fight. He will now coach youngsters at Vauxhall
Motors ABC. He ends with a 5-1 (1) record and is a
shift worker at Vauxhalls.
He says it was also becoming increasingly difficult
to boil down from his walk-around weight of
around 101/2st to the 8st 10lbs super-bantam limit.
MARK WINTERS maintains he is on track
for a showdown with British lightweight
champion Graham Earl despite almost
coming unstuck at the Ulster Hall.
Winters (9st lOlbs 12oz) was outfought for the majority
of his eight-rounder with Scottish lightweight champion
Martin Watson on a Mike Callahan-John Breen promotion
aptly billed as "Fright Night".
However, instead of Watson (9st 10lbs) walking away
with a deserved victory over the former British lightwelter
champion, he had to settle for a 77-77 draw
from referee David Irving.
It was one of the worst decisions in recent memory in
Belfast.
