Oscar to box on
FOR now Oscar De La Hoya is concentrating his
efforts on building his promotional business, but
the Golden Boy said his fighting days, though
nearing the end, are not over.
De La Hoya will not box again until next year
and said a third fight with Shane Mosley, though
not his priority, is a possibility.
"It will definitely be against a top two or three
rated contender," he said. "I still want to fight
Mosley, too, because I want revenge.
"I'm still deciding my next move. I'm going to
fight and I love the sport. But I'm spending about
70 per cent of my time on promoting.
"I want to change the sport because right now
it has a bad image in the public's eye."

AS uneasy as most of us are
with the prospect that
physically fit, healthy men
can quite easily become
severely impaired through
boxing, there is a point at which we
must place great responsibility in the
hands of the participants, the ruling
bodies and, perhaps most of all, the
medical practitioners who provide
invaluable advice and expertise.
This week, in one of the more extraordinary
stories to hit the sport for years, it was revealed
Mexico's Marco Antonio Barrera, the best
featherweight in the world, had brain surgery
back in 1997 - before his brutal first fight with
Erik Morales and going up against a feared
puncher like Naseem Hamed.

LEONARD DORIN lost his WBA lightweight title on
the scales last weekend, when failing to make the
9st 9lbs limit for a scheduled mandatory defence
against Miguel Callist of Panama in Bucharest.
Romanian Dorin came in 5lbs overweight,
whereas Callist scaled 9st 8lbs. Dorin's promoters
Interbox tried to reach agreement with Callist's
promoter Don King to allow the fight to proceed as
a non-title contest.
During this time, however, Callist, for a reason
not yet unknown, collapsed and lost consciousness.
Any possibility of the fight going ahead was
aborted.
Dorin said he would retire, but has since
changed his mind, while Callist is expected to face
the next highest rated challenger for the vacant
belt in due course.
Interbox estimated they lost in the region of
$200,000 by cancelling the show and having Dorin
stripped of his belt.
