AFTER instigating a war of words and
talking about who was tough and who
was not, BERNARD HOPKINS pulled out of
an IBF cruiserweight title challenge to JAMES
TONEY in Las Vegas on August 9.
THERE appears to be increased talk
about LENNOX LEWIS, if victorious
tomorrow in Los Angeles, taking
on WBA champion ROY JONES, perhaps
as soon as November.
IT was a case of Smillie by name and smiley by nature at
Pennington's Nightclub.
Local boy Donovan Smillie scored an emphatic third-round stoppage over Cleethorpes'
rangy Mike Duffield to claim the vacant British Masters super-middleweight belt.
The 27-year-old local, who worked as a sparring partner for Clinton Woods before the
Sheffield man's date with Roy Jones last year, avenged a points defeat suffered in April
last year to the delight of a vociferous, partisan crowd.
Lodge duo in Belfast
FITZROY LODGE duo Scott McDonald and Anthony Small boxed
in Bangor, Northern Ireland, yesterday (Thursday June 19).
Light-flyweight McDonald was set to take on Abbey's Scott
McKimm, reigning Ulster champion at 51 kgs.
"We were told McKimm would come in under 50 kilos, so
there are no worries about the weight," said Lodge boss Mick
Carney, who has found it hard to match his natural light-fly.
As we went to press, there was no opponent named for
welterweight Small. "The offer came and 10 minutes later
'Smally' was packing his bags," explained Carney, meaning the
boxer needed little time to think it over. "He's very keen to box."
The Lodge pair are guesting on an East Ham Boleyn club trip
to Bangor. Coach Billy Webster travelled with them.
