GUARDED VINCE
VINCENT PHILLIPS, who boxes Ricky Hatton in Manchester on April 5, was particularly
guarded about handing out information.
I chatted with him briefly at last weekend's show and the Florida veteran is clearly in good
shape. Now being trained by Kevin Morgan (Cassius Greene worked the corner for Vince's last
fight against Sharmba Mitchell), Phillips told me he is getting himself ready in Big Bear,
California.

COLIN LYNES (right) of Hornchurch faces
his toughest test on the excellent York
Hall bill tomorrow when he makes the
first defence of his IB0 Inter-continental
light-welter belt against South African
SAMUEL MALINGA. It's set for 12 rounds.
From a well-known fighting family,

Washed-up Bramble finally calls it quits
W0RLEY, Idaho - February 27: Former WBA lightweight champion Livingstone
Bramble announced his retirement after dropping a unanimous six-round decision to
local hero Dewey Welliver, now 13-3-1 (4), at the Coeur d'Alene Casino's House of Fury.
It was the fifth straight loss for the washed-up 42-year-old, who signs off with stats of
40-25-1 (25). He has retired before and came back, but this time said it was permanent.
Bramble, a switch-hitting southpaw, won his 'world' crown in 1984 with a 14th-round
stoppage of TV darling Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. Late editor Harry Mullan, who watched
the fight live in the ITV studios, thought he was going to be special.
Livingstone held it for two years, retaining twice, but was dethroned when knxked out
in two rounds by the late Edwin Rosario. A thumb seemed to catch Bramble in the eye and
he took the count on one knee, holding his eye.

KEVIN MITCHELL and younger brother
Vincent, 15, of Dagenham no longer have
to rely on lifts to get to the gym in Plaistow.
Kevin, 18, passed his driving test at the first
attempt. His sponsor, Aspect Contract Ltd, paid
for his car insurance and gives him work when he
wants. The firm, which his dad works for, deals
with asbestos.
