Mason on guard
GARY MASON never did return my call from a few
months ago when I queried why several boxers
on one of his shows did not get paid.
The former British heavyweight champion has
apparently abandoned his promotional aspirations
and taken a job as a security guard at St Heller's
Hospital in Carshalton to make ends meet.
Mason had suffered a series of business disasters,
but is not bitter or greedy. The 37-year-old sold the
story of his troubles to the News of the World and
gave the money to the hospital's children's ward.
Nice touch, Gary.
AUSTRALIA'S ROBBIE PEDEN
was floored by a good right to
the jaw with less than a minute
remaining but held on to win the vacant
NABF featherweight title with a surprisingly
close I2-round decision over
Mexico's EDGAR BARCENAS at
Silver Star Hotel/Casino.
FOLLOWING Audley Harrison's heroic
triumph in Sydney, England kept up the
good work when they won two golds, one silver
and two bronze at the well-established Feliks
Stamm multi-nations tournament in Warsaw
from October 25-28.
