JOE CALZAGHE'S American debut, set initially for November, has
been postponed until February. "I like the look of him," says Lou Di
Bella, main man at HBO. "He may be the best at super-middle."
Di Bella is also interested in Liverpool's Shamrock Express SHEA
NEARY. "He's Britain's equivalent of Arturo Gatti," he says. "We'd like to
feature him in Boston, perhaps against Mickey Ward on St. Patrick's Day."
But first Neary will defend his WBU light-welterweight title at St
George's Hall in Liverpool on October 24 against an opponent to be
announced shortly. On the sjune Munro/Hyland promotion are PETER
CUISHAW and ALEX MOON.
JOE FRAZIER, the former world heavyweight champion, wants to
bury the hatchet with his great rival Muhammad All. Trouble is
Frazier has not seen All since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where
Smokin' J o e was helping Vaughn Bean prepare for an IBF and WBA
heavyweight title challenge against Evander Holyfield last weekend.
"I need to get together with AH as soon as possible and we need to
embrace," he said. "I'm 54 years old. We both have grandchildren. We
both need to forget all about what happened back then. It's over."
THE vacant WBC light-welter
dtle match between KOSTYA
TSZYL and MIGUEL ANGEL
GONZALEZ, postponed from
October 24, goes ahead on November
28 at a venue to be confirmed. The
same show may also featm^
LUlSrrO ESPINOSA in a WBC
featherweight title defence against
American KENNEDY McMNNEY.
The October date now sees IBF
super-featherweight champion
ROBERT GARCIA defending against
Cuban RAMON LEDON, plus a
super-featherweight rematch
between GABE RUELAS and JESSE
JAMES LEIJA, which, if it is
anything like the first, should be a
treat.
