The mooted Naseem Hamed-
Wayne McCullough showdown
in Las Vegas on
October 31 is close to being
signed. As we went to Press
the loose ends were being
tied, though promoter Frank Warren
insisted Kennedy McKinney. the
WBO's super-bantamweight
champion, and Mexican Marco
Antonio Barrera. who once held
the same crown, were still in the
frame.
McCullough, whom it is reported
was offered $600,000, is the least
test of the three, but Warren, who
several months ago swore he would
never give the Irishman the chance
to earn good money against Naz,
says Wayne keeps calling for the
fight and that is why he might get it.
It could be personal - the Irishman
has accused Naz of running from
him - plus I suspect Hamed tielieves
he can do an easy, systematic job
on the former WBC bantam king,
JOE CAIZAGHE, who injured
his hand defending his WBO
super-middleweight title against Juan
Carios Gimenez in April, will make
his American debut in early
November.
No date or venue has been
confirmed, but Calzaghe will defend
his title on a show to be televised by
cable channel HBO.
Promoter Frank Warren would
like Calzaghe to have a workout
before going Stateside, though the
condition of the Welsh southpaw's
hand will determine that plan.
THE late withdrawal of Italian
^ ^ southpaw Vincenzo Nardiello
on Tuesday from a WBC supermiddleweight
title challenge
against Richie Woodhall in Telford
on September 5 handed British
middleweight champion Glenn
Catiey an unexpected opportunity
to fight for the 'world' title.
The winner will have to defend
against mandatory contender
Nardiello, who has a calf injury, at
a later date, and Catiey, who has
not boxed since defeating Neville
Brown for the domestic crown in
January, can always return to the
11st 61bs ranks to face his top
contender Howard Eastman on
October 24 should he lose.
1 would have preferred to see
Woodhall tackle Catiey's stablemate
Dean Francis, who won
impressively in South Africa last
weekend, but that is a bigger
contest and nearly all the tickets at
the Ice Rink in Richie's hometown
have been sold.
After much negotiation, Catiey
stepped in to fill the vacancy and,
though he will be conceding size,
Glenn can find inspiration in
Brown, who made a similar jump
and pushed Steve Collins hard in
1996.
"Glenn has been after a 'world'
title shot for some time," said
promoter Frank Warren. "I'm sure
it will be a terrific contest. Both
guys want it. I just hope it's in the
tradition of other classic all-British
'world' super-middleweight title
fights like Benn-Piper, Benn-
Eubank, Eubank-Collins, Eubank-
Calzaghe and Reid-Wharton."
