EUROPEAN lightweight champion Billy Schwer is
keeping his eye on the 'world' title picture. During an
interval at Dave Currivcm's promotion in Brentford on
Tuesday, he asked for an update.
Cesar Bazan defends his WBC crown in Mexico this weekend,
WBA king Jean-Baptiste Mendy faces his mandatory
contender in Paris in January, Shane Mosley bwxes in Ledyard
next month (see next story) and Artur Grigorian, the
WBO title-holder, is anxious to unify the crown.
"I'll come back in a few years then, shall I?" said Billy, half
smiling. But Schwer's best bet could now be a domestic
clash against Colin Dunne, with whom he hcis often sparred,
for the WBU crown.

FORMER British lightweight title challenger Tanveer
Ahmed, whilst succeeding in frustrating former IBF
champion Phill Holiday on a recent visit to South Africa,
had half his purse withheld for failing to perform to the
standards the Commission had expected.
Ahmed clciimed a damaged hand, but the Commission
doctor could find nothing wrong. I suspect Ahmed, if he
feels he has been treated harshly, will appeal against the
Commission's decision.
Our correspondent, Pete Moscardi, said it was a poor
performance. "But Ahmed succeeded in making Holiday
look awful," said Peter.

ALEX MOON became a champion of sorts, winning the WBU's
vacant Continental featherweight crown in his 14th fight (11-1-2)
with a unanimous 12-round decision over lanky South African
KHAYALETHU BOOI, an unluiown even in his own country.
The Scouser won clearly, 116-112 (twice) and 117-111, but was
disappointing, if only I)ecau8e the opportunity was there to win more
convincingly. Bool, as light a puncher as one could hope to see, had a
reported 6-Z (1) record, no domestic ranking to speak of and appeiired
wide open to body shots.
