SHEFFIELD'S Ryan Rhodes has withdrawn
from a vacant European middleweight title
fight with Frenchman All Ennebatl. which suggests
the Englishman is being lined-up for something
more significant. Ennebati will now meet
compatriot Erland Betare. The two Frenchmen
met in October 1994, w i th Betare winning on a
second-round stoppage - Ennebati's only defeat.
And it will be interesting to see how Rhodes'
conqueror Otis Grant fares when he challenges
Roy J o n e s for the WBC light-heavyweight title at
Foxwoods in Ledyard on November 14. The same
bill features active IBF lightweight champion
Shane Mosley against Israel Cardona.
JUUO CESAR CHAVEZ, beaten
by Oscar De La Hoya last
month, though not without a
struggle, has chfuiged his mind
about fighting VINCE PHILLIPS,
the IBFs light-welterweight champion.
Chavez, 36, has turned his
aftention to the WBC tide, currently
vacant, but to be contested
by KOSTYA TSZYU and MIGUEL
ANGEL GONZALEZ on November
28 in Corpus Christi.
The veteran Mexican drew
with Gonzalez for the vacant
WBC lOst tiUe in March, but
boxed far better against De La
Hoya before quitting on his stool
after eight rounds.
