RICHIE WENTON, who bids for the vacant WBO
super-bsmtamweight title in Atlantic City on
October 31, has no shortage of confidence going into
his 12-rounder against the much-fancied Mexican
MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA, the former champion.
"I really believe I can beat him," says Wenton, who
has been in training four weeks with Glyn Rhodes and
Herol Graham in Sheffield. "I don't believe Barrera is
as strong as Wilson Docherty [whom Wenton outpointed
in 1996]"
The Scouser, having studied tapes of the Mexican,
believes he has the style, technique and plan to prevail.
"I will run and move, baffle him. Barrera is fit, it's
more or less his country and he has a big reputation.
But that's all. I'll outbox him. I don't need power to
beat him and it will be good for me [that Barrera is a
strong favourite] when I beat him.
"I watched Beirrera's win over Kennedy McKinney
on tape. If you turn down the volume and see the
shots he is taking, Barrera looks as though he is losing.
"McKinney made the mistake of standing with him.
I am going to go to America 10 days before the fight. I
will be in terrific shape and Herol will be at my side
for moral support. He has been there before.
"But I genuinely can't wait. If he is better than me I
will be the first to admit it."
NASEEM HAMED is back on terrestrial television. The WBO featherweight
champion who defends against Wayne McCullough in
Atlantic City on October 31, appears in a series of television commercials.
The advertising cfunpaign for Adidas was shown in its entirety for
the first amd only time on October 2. It contcdns close-ups of Naz tstlking
into the camera combined with fight footstge. In total there are
eight 20-second slots - some amusing, others more serious - labelled
rounds 1-8, which will be shown randomly over the next few weeks
leading up to his forthcoming defence. The sequences were filmed in a
King's Cross gym.
Specddng on the new Choice digital channel recently, Hamed admitted,
"The only thing I am really disappointed about [boxing on satellite
TV only] is that the whole nation doesn't get to see my ability any
more. They don't see what 1 am doing for Britain. It's a bit of a letdown.
I am proud of what 1 do."
ROSS HALE, the Bristol southpaw whose worid fell apart when he
was knocked out in the first round by Paul Ryan in December 1995,
gets the chance to prove himself again when he chcillenges for GEOFF
McCREESH'S British welterweight title at Basingstoke Ice Rink on October
31.
The official main event, however, features hard-hitting super-middleweight
DEAN FRANCIS against an opponent to be confirmed. Croydon
light-middleweight puncher WAYNE ALEXANDER takes on American
JASON PAPILLION in an eight-rounder.
