lewis so close to HolyfieU oow
•
THE only contest In the heavyweight divi.sion
which has any genuine significance - EVA.NDER
HOLYFIELD against LENNOX LEWIS - was clo.se to
completion as we went to Press.
Lewis' manager Frank .Maloney confirmed that
talks with Don King in Florida in late December
were successful and if the contest did not take
place, it would not be the fault of Lewis or Holyfield's
promoter.
JULIEN LORCY was an interested observer at ringside at the London
Arena on December 19 when Barry Jones won the WBO super-featherweight
belt the Frenchman twice failed to clinch last year (see pages 14-15).
According to Lorcy's promoter Michel Acaries, Jones-Lorcy should take
place in Paris on February 21, otherwise it will go to purse bids.
MICKEY CANTWELL'S bid to
become a 'world' champion
effectively ended shortly before
the opening round had come to a
close when a slicing right uppercut
from Filipino southpaw ERIC
JAMIU split the bridge of his nose
open.
CHESTERFIELD'S Greg Scott-
Briggs outscored Birmingham's
game Michael Plnnock over
six closely-contested rounds in a fitting
finale to an excellent three-fight
dinner show at the Robin Hood
Sporting Club.
