JOHNNY BREDAHL'S withdrawal from a European bantamweight title
defence against British champion Drew Docherty had nothing to do
with smoking cannabis, I am informed.
The Dane, who admitted to smoking marijuana five days before his
last fight, suffered damaged ribs in sparring with European flyweight
champion Jesper Jensen.
The EBU have turned a blind eye, though, to Bredahl's recreational
habits. Fortunately, Johnny is no longer WBO champ, because they take a
tougher line on the subject.
A SHOT at British lightweight champion Michael Ayers is the prize for
the winner when former two-time ABA champion Alan Temple meet's
local Tanveer Ahmed in a battle of southpaws at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow
on Wednesday (February 12), writes MARK BUTCHER.
With Ayers focused on WBO champion Artur Grigorian, the winner here
could end up fighting either Colin Dunne or Billy Schwer for the vacant title.
That should prove ample incentive for Temple who, following a mixed
start to his career, shot into title contention after a tremendous eight- round
tussle with Schwer at Brent last October. Only a last-round knockdown
saved a heavily-bleeding Schwer from a draw. Since then Temple, 74 (2),
has outpointed Harry Escott over eight in December.
Ahmed, 14-1-1 (7), returned to form in November with a fifth-round stoppage
of Floyd Churchill after struggling to an eight-round draw with Kevin
McKillan in May.
It is an even contest. Both have sound jabs and good ability, but Temple,
boosted by his close loss to Schwer, needs a similar showing to make ?ure
of victory. He lost a highly-disputed decision in Scotland to Scott Dickson
last September, which could drive him to nick a tight points success.
JOHNNY ARMOUR will find the
climb to the top of the world
rankings much harder second
time around judging by his gruelling
unanimous 12-round points victory
over the little-known but tough
Romanian Petrica Janos Paraschiv at
York Hall.
