GARY JACOBS' move to Frank
Maloney surprised me. 1
thought he would join Maloney's
rival Frank Warren now that the Scot
has decided to campaign as a lightmiddle.
Warren holds all the aces at
domestic level in Ryan Rhodes, Ensley
Bingham and Steve Foster, and
his association with Don King could
also have paved the way to a 'world'
opportunity against Terry Norris.
But Maloney says he is angling to
get Jacobs (left) another world
chance, presumably against either
WBA champion Laurent Boudouani
or WBO title-holder Ronald Wright,
who must fulfil a mandatory against
Adrian Dodson some time this year.
•
"I will get him a couple of
good wins," Maloney said.
"Both sides are happy with the promotional
deal. He will make his
debut for me on March 25 - possibly
in Scotland - when Chris Okoh
defends his Commonwealth and
WBO Inter-continental cruiserweight
titles."
SOUTHERN Area heavyweight
champion JULIUS
FRANCIS is in Phoenix sparring
with Lennox Lewis in preparation
for a February 15 European
title challenge against Croatian
ZEUKO MAVROVIC at the.
Kurhalle Oberlaa in Vienna. He
has had no shortage of offers,
says manager Frank Maloney.
"I had a call from Main
Events wanting Julius to fight
DAVID TUA in New Zealand,"
he said. "I would have taken it
if he had not already signed for
Mavrovic."
The night before Francis' title
bid, Maloney's super-middleweight
CHRIS JOHNSON is in
action in Toronto on the under-
C£trd to Commonwealth lightweight
champion BILLY IRWIN's
rematch with DAVID TETTEH.
BRADFORD'S Junior Whitter (lOst) proved awkward
and skilful, but ran out of steam over the
second half of his professional debut against
Midlands Area champion Cam Raeside and had
to settle for a 59-point draw after six rounds.
Not bad for his first fight, but the contest got out
of hand and during the second round - after Raeside
was swung to the floor - an angry local fan tried to
jump into the ring before being quickly apprehended
by security men as he reached the ropes.
Referee Phil Moyse lost control almost from the
start. When Raeside went down from a left-right-left
in the first, Mr Moyse spread his arms to signal no
knockdown. What did he think when he turned
round to find Raeside on one knee awaiting a count?
But the loose-limbed switch-hitter, now in Brendan
Ingle's gym, gave Raeside (lOst 5 3/41bs) a frustrating
night, though the Ilkeston man had enough experience
to get on with the job and his perseverance paid off.
Raeside fell off balance to the floor in the fourth
and was wrestled down in the fifth, though by that
stage Whitter was looking more to survive and
waste time.
