RAY CLOSE, after being forced to
continue his career in America, is
taking the Boxing Board of Control to
the High Court - expected in May - to
seek compensation for lost earnings.
And Close (pictured right), who has
won both contests over six rounds in
Chicago - on November 15 against 37-
year-old Jake Torrance, then against
Terry Ford, the American who lost over
eight rounds to the comebacking Herol Graham in November - has been granted
legal aid to fight his case.
I know of no precedent for a sportsman receiving legal aid to tackle a governing
body, but Close, after consulting with lawyers, was considered because
his earnings were below a stipulated amount.
• The boxer failed the Board's routine CAT scan before a scheduled third
fight against then-WBO super-middleweight champion Chris Eubank in
March 1995. Steve Collins, who came in as his replacement, subsequently outpointed
Eubank twice.
That's not to suggest Close - who lost and drew with Eubjmk - would have
achieved the same success, but he is claiming for lost earnings.
He twice passed the more advanced MRl scan, once in Dublin and America,
and now Close intends to fight again this month or next to get a position in the
WBO ratings whereby he could challenge Collins, his one-time stablemate.
BRITISH light-heavyweight champion CRAWFORD ASHLEY has
been ruthlessly-impressive since switching camps from Frank
Warren to Frank Maloney, but the opposition has been less than challenging.
And Ukrainian PETER KAMARENKO was punished in one
minute 58 seconds of a scheduled eight-rounder on the Bethnal
Green show.

champion
Joe Calzaghe will be out
to impress when he debuts
for new promoter Frank
Warren in a 10-rounder against
Spanish import Jose Antonio
Bayon at the Whitchurch Leisure
Centre on Tuesday (January
21).
