ITALIAN cruiserweight
champion MARCO
GUIDELLI made another of his
rare appearances when he
retained his title by halting
MASSmiLlANO SAIANl in
seven rounds in Guastalla on
March 8. It was only Marco's
second defence in four years.
LUIGICASTIGLIONE warmed
up for his WBU title flyweight
fight with a points win over
Tunisian ABDEL BEN MESSAOUD
in Altamura on March
12 while, on the same show,
former Olympian MICHELE
PICCIRILLO knocked out Spanish
lightweight MIGUEL ANGEL
PENA in two rounds.
In another Italian show, in
Mazaro del Vallo on March
15, Russian light-middleweight
king DJUMALETDI
scored a useful win as he
forced Croatian MUSTAFA ILIR
to retire in the sixth.
FRANK WARREN reacted
angrily to my column piece
on pay-per-view last week when I
suggested that had the Holyfield-
Tyson rematch gone ahead as
originally scheduled last weekend,
it would have been included
in Sky's package.
"That was never the case," said
Warren. "Sky buy the fights from
me. I own the rights, not Sky and
it's up to me how / deal with payper-
view.'
THE mammoth 12-fight
show ended at the ungodly
hour of one o'ciock in the morning
with only a handful of fans
staying on to see mixed fortunes
for a pair of Manchester fighters
in four-rounders.
Former ABA Youth and NABC
champion ANTHONY FARNELL
(lOst 61bs), the latest from Brian
Hughes' Collyhurst camp, made a
successful professional debut
when he took a 39 1/2-39 decision
from referee Phil Edwards
over Liverpool's LEE
MOLYNEAUX (lOst 81bs).
A draw would have been a
fairer result, however, with
Molyneaux's strong finish in the
last two rounds appearing to cancel
out Farnell's fast start.
Anthony beat Lee to the punch
in the opener, landing plenty of
right crosses, and then continued
the good work in round two
when he went to the body effectively.
But then the Manchester lad
suddenly stopped working near
the end of the second, allowing
Molyneaux to take control with
rights to the ribs in round three.
The Scouser took the last as
well, banging in rights to the
head and resisting Farnell's fight-
DANIEL HERBERT
at RINGSIDE
back near the end of the session,
but it was not enough for Mr
Edwards.
The last contest of the night
took place in semi-darkness after
some of the ring lights were
turned off in preparation for the
closing of the arena, but referee
Edwards saw well enough to
award Merthyr southpaw CHRIS
WILLIAMS a 39 1/2-39 decision
over Manchester's MICHAEL
GOMEZ.
•
They spent almost the
entire four rounds standing
toe-to-toe, ignoring defence to
slam away with big hooks from
both hands. Gomez (9st 1 l/41bs)
was the more accurate in the
opener, but Williams (8st 121bs)
took control with a burst of six
punches at the end of the second
and then dominated round
three.
Both were tired in the last, but
the Welshman shrugged off trouble
with his gumshield - twice it
came out and had to be washed'
and replaced - to hurt Gomez
with a right-left-right and seal a
good win.
