COMMONWEALTH middleweight champion ROBERT McCRACKEN, as
was hinted last week, has signed with American promoter Mat Tinley,
better known for his role as advisor to Irish super-bantamweight Wayne
McCullough.
The deal is for McCracken to have two warm-ups, then a shot at IBF
champion BERNARD "THE EXECUTIONER" HOPKINS, probably the toughest
of the four champions.
"I've got to gamble," said McCracken. "1 think it will come off. I've been
guaranteed a 'world' title shot and will spend a couple of weeks in
America before the 10-rounders.
"It's pointless fighting the other champions when you won't get the
recognition for beating them. Hopkins is regarded as the best and I'll also
earn the money that goes with beating him."
McCracken admitted his devotion to training has not been what it
should have been in recent times. "Perhaps I'd have been there two years
earlier if I'd put more effort into training," he said.
"But Frank Warren made me a good offer and I appreciated it. 1 respect
Mat - he has done a lot for McCullough."
BILLY HARDY, beaten in one round by Naseem
Hamed last month, could be heading for France
again to face MEHDI LABDOUNI, whom he outpointed
to become European featherweight champion in
1995. Labdouni's promoters won the purse bids.
u n b e a t e n Scottish super-bantamweight BRIAN

on June 13 against ANTON GILMORE.
DANISH promoter Mogens Palle won the purse
bids for SOREN SONDERGAARD'S European lightwelterweight
title defence against ANDY
HOLLIGAN. No date has been announced.
GARY JACOBS is preparing in Havana, Cuba for
his next fight - probably in London - on July 12.
VETERAN Ugandan puncher JOHN MUGABl, the
former WBC light-middle king, is scheduled to box
again on June 19. His opponent on the Gold Coast
in Australia will be JAMIE WALLACE.
CHIEF support to Hide-
Tucker will be local lightwelterweight
JONATHAN
THAXTON, whose previous performance
in Norwich was a
rousing success.
Thaxton's mother, Marion,
sold approximately 1,800 tickets
for his win over Paul Burke in
March and said she could reach
the 3,000 mark this time.
