• THE COMMONWEALTH
COUNCIL has confirmed
that British featherweight champion
PAUL INGLE is the also the
Commonwealth title-holder following
the confusing circumstances
surrounding the
Scarborough man's eighthround
retirement win over JON
JO IRWIN last month.
Irwin's manager John Rushton
claimed that the Doncaster
man had relinquished his Commonwealth
crown hours prior
to his unification fight with
Yorkshire rival Ingle, which
took place at the Sheffield
Arena in the early hours of
October 12.
But the Commonwealth Council
stated that all championship
formalities had been completed
and that Ingle is the champion.
FRANK WARREN has given his
version of the altercation
between Naseem Hamed and Chris
Eubank at Heathrow Airport a couple
of weeks back.
"1 wish people checked the facts.
Naz didn't throw the first punch. The
first punch was thrown by Chris
Eubank. Chris was probably 13 1/2
stone after his last fight and Naz was
at tops 9 1/2 stone.
"Naz showed Chris his 'world' title
belts and Eubank threw a punch and
caught Naz on the shoulder Naz
retaliated and punched Eubank on
the mouth. Naz did not throw the
first punch.
"It's a shame the press Naz seems
to get. I've seen the charity things
Naz does, but he doesn't blow his
trumpet about them. He does work
for the Teenage Cancer Trust and
does a lot for kids. He took an ill kid
out in his car on the day of a fight,
but no-one wants to hear about that.
"Certain members of the press -
particularly the older generation -
don't like the way Naz handles himself
outside the ring. They talk about
Muhammad All with a glint in his eye,
but he knocked on Sonny Liston's
door at 2am with TV cameras and
called Joe Frazier and Floyd Patterson
Uncle Toms.
IF you are ever in Madrid it might be worth
paying former European featherweight champion
MANUEL CALVO (pictured with his wife) a
visit.
The 55-year-old, whose son (same name) lost on
points to Jon Jo Irwin for the WBO Inter-continentai
featherweight crown in 1995, runs a successful
bar, named Caivo's Pub.
Manuel was just one of a host of former Spemish
champions present at the Billy Schwer-Oscar Garcia
Cano European lightweight title match in
Zaragoza on October 25. The others included Jose
Duran, Perico Fernandez (who knocked out Calvo),
Alfredo Evangelista and Alfonso Redondo.
