MIKE TYSON'S six-fight deal with the MGM-Grand hotel in Las Vegas
was brought to sui early conclusion last weekend, one fight short of
its termination next March.
The hotel claimed Tyson, who boxed at the MGM five times in his last
six fights, was in breach of the contract because he was unable to box
again before the contract was due to expire. Hotel officials met with
Tyson's promoter Don King to reach a settlement.
Though Tyson is eligible to apply for his licence in Nevada again in
July, one wonders whether the hotel will resume interest in the sport,
having turned down the chance to promote next month's WBA/IBF title
fight between Evjuider Holyfield and Michael Moorer.
SKY commentator GLENN McCRORY, the former IBF cruiserweight
champion, was shocked to read Hughroy Currie's account of their
sparring sessions in last week's Boxing News. "He never knocked me out
in sparring," said McCrory, stopped in two by Currie in Oldham in 1986.
"People say things all the time, but that's a load of rubbish.
KELTON McKENZIE,
through no fault of his
own, has yet to defend the
Midlands featherweight title
he won five years ago.
Promoter Johnny Griffln is
calling for the Midlands Council
to nominate a challenger
and states that McKenzie is
ready and willing to take on
all-comers.
"No title should be kept on
ice for so long," says Griffin.
"Championships are the lifeblood
of boxing and it's important
the machinery is kept
moving.
"McKenzie is dedicated
and determined. He's capable
of defending it when
ordered, but I'm still pressing
his claims."
