BOXING Is certainly
in Cliris Johnson's
blood. All four of the
brothers Johnson
were national amateur
champions in
Canada. Brother Greg
won a silver medal at
the 1990 Commonwealth
Games and is
a promising light-middleweight
with an 11-
2 record.
One of h i s losses
came on p o i n t s to
former WBO champion
Bronco McKart.

THREE-TIME Welsh ABA
middleweight champion
GRANT BRIGGS, cheered
on by a large contingent
from his home village,
Gilfynydd, began his professional
career by taking
ail four rounds (40-
38) against the limited
but game PAUL
MATTHEWS from
Fontardduiais.

GOOD to see how
Charles Murray
(above) has rebuilt his
career.The former IBF
light-welterweight champion
looked to be on the
skids when he dropped
his title to Jake Rodriguez
and then lost to Ray
Olivera. Wins over Reggie
Green, Tony Lopez and
revenge over Rodriguez
have rebuilt "The Natural".
Japanese boxing lost
one of its major figures
with the recent death of
Makoto Hosaka. Mr
Hosaka had been the
President of the Japanese
Boxing Commission and of
the Korakuen Stadium, the
major fight venue in Japan.
Action in the Korakuen
Stadium on June 1 saw
lightweight Hiroyuki
Sakamoto hold on to his
OPBF crown by decisioning
top challenger Dindo
Canoy. It was Sakamoto's
first defence. His only loss
in 23 fights was to Juan
Coggi in May 1995.
Former double world
champion Hiroki loka
returned to action with a
points victory over Ricky
Sales in Hiroshima on
June 3. Hiroki was WBC
strawweight champion
back in 1987 and has now
moved up to super-fly.
Jintoku Sato made the
eighth defence of his
national welterweight title
with a fourth-round kayo
of his leading challenger
Shlnji Saeki in Sendai on
June 15. The 21-year-old
southpaw is 25-2 (23 early).
