Boxing News history

BRITAIN'S proudest moment in boxing this year
came on the night of October 1 at Wembley's Empire
Pool, when our own JOHN CONTEH won the vacant
world light-heavyweight title (World Boxing Council
version). It just had to be Britain's fight of the year.

RECENTLY I had the chance to chat with some of
boxing's true greats  ex-world champions Jersey
Joe Walcott, Tony Zale and Ike Williams.

THE YOUNG brothers, GERRY and TERRY, of Oliver Plunkett's, Belfast, completed a
family double when helping the Rest to beat a President's selection 6-2 in this promotion
before a small crowd at the National Stadium, writes Owen McCann.

IRISH international JOHN RODGERS (Lisburn) produced
his best form to out-box and out-fight Scottish welter
king-pin STEVE COONEY (St Francis) in the top of the bill
contest on the St Francis Sporting Club's dinner show in
Dundee, WRITES FRANK GILFEATHER.

NEWLY-CROWNED British bantamweight champion
Dave Needham has earned a quick reward for his
thrilling championship victory over Paddy Maguire at
Nottingham earlier this month — he has been named
by the European Boxing Union as official contender
for the European title, currently held by 31-year-old
Bob Allotey of Spain.
