LOCAL hero Mickey Cantwell crowned his career
by winning the vacant British flyweight title at the
age of 32 when he took a 12-rounds points decision
over Bonnyrigg's Keith Knox at the Elephant &
Castle Leisure Centre.
But referee Mickey Vann's verdict of 117 1/2-117 to
the Eltham man left many at ringside baffled, with a clear
majority among the Press section - including me - thinking
the Scot had been robbed.
1 scored 8-3-1 in rounds to Knox, who made up for in sheer
effort what he lacked in class as he got the better of Cantwell
in a clear majority of the sessions.
• HARROW southpaw PATRICK
MULUNGS (8st ISlbs) scored a
good win when he pulled out two
big punches to stop normally
durable DANNY RUEGG (Sst ISlbs)
from Bournemouth in the third of a
scheduled eight-rounder.
ROCKY CANNON and Earl Butler took
turns rocking each other in a 10-round
war at light-heavy in the Williams-
Weathers chief support.
Rocky Gannon (12st 9 l/21bs), from Bay City,
Michigan, got jolted constantly on his
lantern jaw, but seldom stopped coming.
Exhausted as he looked at times, Butler
fought back furiously and scored an upset
split decision win.
GREGORIO BENITEZ,

shock victory over Roberto
Duran back in 1972.
