FORMER treble ABA champion Joe Calzaghe
returned to his home country for his third win as a
professional and had to go past the first round for
the first time. Not much further, however, with referee
Roddy Evans rescuing the outgunned Spencer
Alton late in the second.
BIG-PUNCHING Garry Delaney won the vacant WBO
Penta-Continental light-heavyweight title by dismissing
Guyana's Ray Albert in three one-sided rounds at
Grosvenor House.
It's hard to say how much the "title" means - as an
indication to Delaney's potential, I'd say his sixthround
win over Glazz Campbell, which earned
Delaney the Southern Area crown, was far more
meaningful.
FLASHY Ray Oliveira boxed
beautifully for three rounds,
but rugged Zack Padilla
mounted his "Zack Attack" in
the fourth and punched his
way to a non-stop 12-round
unanimous decision before a
roaring, packed house of
5,000 at the Foxwoods Casino
to retain his WBO lightwelterweight
title. Dr
Ruben Garcia scored it
118-110; Ismael Fernandez
had it 116-113; Nelson
Vasquez called it
117-112.
TWENTY-ONE-year-old JASON COBB (Aylsham
Youth Club), back in the ring after an 18-month
absence, had to battle hard for his points win over
Lynn Friars' busy-fisted TERRY STIMSON at the
Regis Rooms.
