HEROL GRAHAM will understand better than anybody
what Welsh light-heavyweight Nicky Piper
must be feeling after his dramatic ninth-round defeat
by Leeonzer Barber in their thrilling WBO title battle
at the National Ice Rink.
The manner of Piper's defeat
The theatrics that

PRINCE NASEEM
HAMED (Sst lOIbs)
were accompanied by
a more serious
approach when he
had difficulty removing
Birmingham's
PETER BUCKLEY (9st
lOlbs), who was prematurely
halted by
referee Bassett in the
fourth of a scheduled
six-threes.
THOMAS HEARNS' second outing at cruiserweight
ended the same way as the first, with a
one round knockout victory, but it was against
an opposition so feeble that it gave us no real
indication of whether he can win a "world" crown at
this, his sixth weight.
Quite how Dan Ward of West Memphis, Arkansas,
came to be in a bout for the vacant North American
Boxing Federation cruiser crown against Hearns is a
mystery.
FORMER ABA middleweight champion Lee Woolcock (Canvey)
moved up to light-heavy and won the Essex title with
a third round knockout of Halstead's Kurt Manders at the
Civic Hall.
Southpaw Woolcock faced Manders to take a standing
eight count from a left cross and right hook in th e opener,
but otherwise looked sluggish in the first two sessions. But
then early in round three he pulled out a right cross to put
the brave Manders down for the count.
