WELSHMAN Steve Robinson made believers
of those who still doubted he could compete
at the highest level with a flawless
12th and final round victory over former
WBC champion Paul Hodkinson to retain his less
prestigious WBO crown at the National Ice Rink.
NORTHAMPTON llght-mlddleweight
KEVIN MABBUTT
(lOst lOlbs) squeezed home by
half a point against Grimsby survivor
RICKY NORTH (lOsl 81bs)
at the Reflections Sporting Club.
Referee Jim Prlddlng's 59-58'/2
decision for Mabbutt met witli a
mixed reception - and tlie bout was
close enougli to have gone either
way with North making life difficult
for Mabbutt all the way through.
LOCAL firefighter B.F. Williams found the climb to
claim his first title too steep as he was floored and
stopped in four one-sided rounds by Norwich's
Jonathan Thaxton in a bid for the vacant Southern
Area championship on Steve Holdsworth's promotion
at the Town Hall.
FORMER ABA featherweight champion Alan Temple
took a big step towards this year's light-welter crown
when he stopped fellow England international Jason
Vlasman in two rounds when the Northern Counties
finals were held at Thornaby Pavilion.
Temple, from Hartlepool Boys Welfare, quickly found the
range against Vlasman, from Gemini. The Liverpool boxer
kept poking out his left jab to the head, but was made to pay
for it by southpaw Temple.
