CHRIS EUBANK repeatedly promises to fight anybody, but
always there is the unspoken qualification "except James
Toney, Michael Nunn or whoever". Lennox Lewis says the
same, but means it. He proved that by demanding Razor
Ruddock as an opponent at a time when Ruddock was
regarded as the heavyweight division's danger man.
Lewis flattened him In two spectacular rounds, but since
then has been treading water, unable to get the matches he
wants and needs to advance his campaign to become
Britain's first world heavyweight champion this century.
The mega-fights keep coming tantalisingly close, and then
drifting away before the
WBC champ can pin them
down.
The challenge of returning from a year's layoff
to take on one of the world's best at the weight
proved too much for British flyweight champion
Francis Ampofo, whose bid for the WBO
title against South African holder 'Baby' Jake Matlala
ended after nine rounds in front of Ampofo's
local fans at York Hall.
LONDON ABA had an inexperienced side but still
managed to beat the British Police 8-2 at the Royal
Lancaster Hotel on May 19.
Best bout of the evening was a light-heavyweight
thriller between London's Liam Hanrahan and Paul
Forester of the Police. Hanrahan overcame a big
height disadvantage to score well with hooks from
range as well as on the inside.
IT WAS silver for Danny
Happe and bronze for
Billy Tyrrell as England
resumed their multinational
travels abroad
in the 13th Italia under-
19 tournament held on
the Italian island of Sardinia.
Boxing at lightweight,
Happe(Repton Cedar
Street) chalked up
three wins before losing
to Italian Giusseppe
Lauri in the final,
adjudged to be an
astonishing 16-1 loser.
