IT PROVED to be a case of unlucky 13 for
Sean Baker (lOst 12y4lbs) in his top of the
bill clash with Swansea's Paul Lynch (lOst
12Ibs) at the Marriott Hotel. After chalking
up 11 wins and a draw from 12 previous
outings since turning professional at the
start of the 1992 season, the Bristol social
worker suffered his first defeat when he
was stopped in the third round of what had
been scheduled for eight-threes.
COMEBACKING Tommy Morrison scored
another guaranteed win, banging out Bryan
"Boom Boom" Scott (17st lOlbs) Kansas
City, Missouri, at 1:37 of the second round
before a raucous crowd of about 4,500 at
the County Expo Center.
"Once we started puttin' pressure on him I
knew I'd win," said Morrison, now 40-2 (35),
LEGEND has it Ponce de
Leon searched for the
fabled Fountain of
Youth hereabouts and
Roberto Duran found
one rare punch from his
past and broke outclassed
Terry Thomas'
nose with a right hand.
But after Thomas clambered
erect, it was as
clear as the battered,
bloody nose on his face
that the fight should be
stopped. It finally was at
1:02 of the fourth round.
A standing room-only
crowd of about 5,000
jammed the Casino Magic
tent, but Duran, a
four-time "world champion",
is no longer a serious
contender, he's just
a podgy apparition.
There is just one defending
champion - double lightheavyweight
titleholder Kelly
Oliver, who has his 1992
finals opponent Paul Rogers
in the Gateshead line-up,
with newcomers Naveen
MIrza and Glen Williams
making up the foursome.
