DEL BRYAN'S first defence of the British
welterweight title against DEREK
GRAINGER, postponed from last December,
goes ahead at Dagenham's Goresbrook
Leisure Centre on Thursday
(February 17).
MANCHESTER'S Carl Thompson pulled off a tremendous win when he knocked
out Massimiliano Duran of Italy in eight rounds to win the European cruiserweight
title.
The hard-hitting Champs Camp boxer shook Duran in the second before finally making
his punching power tell in round eight.
A big right hand hurt Duran (13st TVilbs) badly, making the champion drop his guard.
Thompson followed up to land several more heavy blows and put Duran
down for the full count from referee Raymond Bachelet of France alter two minutes 20
seconds of the round.
BIG-hitting cruiserweight NORBERT EKASSI underlined his right to a
world title shot when he demolished experienced Texan VINCENT BOULWARE
in the first of a scheduled ten.
ONLY a year ago brash, cocky Greg Haugen
was fighting before 132,000 screaming Mexicans
and held the world's stage. But after a
bad beating and failing to dethrone legendary
Julio Cesar Chavez, he found himself back on
the "comeback trail" before a couple of hundred,
half-interested spectators at the Foxwood
Casino, stopping unknown Darren
Brennan in six rounds.
DON KING'S plans have been knocked sideways witli
the unsuspecting defeat of JUUO CESAR CHAVEZ.
FRANKIE RANDALL, who beat Chavez on a split decision,
may feature in a warm-up for a rematch on May 7
on a King promotion at the MGM-Grand, Las Vegas on
March 4 that was to have pitted Chavez against WBO
lightweight titleholder Giovanni Parisi.
