JOE AWOME, the former ABA and Commonwealth Gaines heavyweight
champion, died of a brain tumour on 27 January, leaving a widow and
young family.
He had a short but exciting p r o c a r e e r under Mickey Duff's management,
and was part of that heavyweight quintet who, matched against e a A other
in a round robin of multiple knockdowns, quick finishes and upsets provided
such rousing down-the-bill entertainment on the Albert Hadl and
Wembley shows m the late 70s.

Gabriel: you had only to p e rm any two from the four to produce a thriller.
J o e , 42, seemed to lack the hard edge needed for success in the pro game,
and would probably have been happier in an extended amateur career.
