The road to the top could prove
even steeper second time
around for Luton's Billy
Schwer, who was given ample
cause for concern by tricky and
fast southpaw counter-puncher
Stephen Chungu until the former
IBF title challenger's strength, size
and persistence told in the 11th
round at York Hall.
Schwer, defending his
Commonwealth title and boxing for
the first time since he was stopped
by Rafael Ruelas in January, found
himself consistently nailed by the
Zambian, who claimed less than 10
fights in a career which started
after the Olympics in Barcelona
where he eliminated Irish amateur
star Paul Griffin.
YARMOUTH'S MARTY DUKE ( l i s t)
will take a long rest, not retire as
was announced after his third-round
cut-«ye stoppage defeat by NICKY
THURBIN in a scheduled six-threes.
Thurbin, from dayhall. had won ttie
first two rounds, landing a solid right with
no effect in the opener and cutting his
opponent on the r i ^ t eye in the second.
Duke tried to rally in the third, but
he couldn't land as cleanly as
Thurbin ( l i s t 1 l/41bs), who
r e s p o n d e d more e f f e c t i v e l y and
when referee Hinds inspected the
damage, he signalled the end with
two minutes 13 seconds gone.
FRANK BRUNO reminded us, not
for the first time, of what we
have known for years - that men
without ambition or a world'
title belt strapped around their waist
will never beat nim.
There's a fine line which separates those
who would be favoured to defeat Bruno and
the men who will crumble in a couple of
rounds. Oliver McCall, the WBC champion
and Bruno's next opponent, undoubtedly
falls into the former category, but there was
no misplacing the inappropriately-named
"Mighty" Mike Evans, who until a year ago
had something of a reputation for durability,
but came in overweight cmd fought with
flickering ambition until Bruno finished him
off at the end of the second round at the
Kelvin Hall.
