JOHN RUIZ is the new WBC International heavyweight
champion after knocking out fellow-
American Derrick Roddy in the second round of a
scheduled 12-rounder for the vacant title at the
Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre, but so feeble was
the opposition that we were left no wiser about the winner's
chances of contesting a more significant crown.

ELLESMERE PORT'S Paul  loyd showed that his
British super-bantamweight title defeat by Richie Wanton
last March was well and truly behind him when he scored an
emphatic second-round stoppage over Gary Burrell of
Kirkcaldy as the first Munro/Hyland Bros, promotion drew a
capacity crowd to the Everton Park Sports Centre.

PROFESSIONAL boxing, particularly at the highest level, has no
place for amateurs, as giant Cuban Jorge Luis Gonzalez found
out to his cost when he was mercilessly exposed and hammered
to a humiliating sixth-round knockout defeat by arch enemy
Riddick Bowe at the MGM-Grand Garden.

SHORT and stocky Aussie Justin Fortune will provide the
opposition for Lennox Lewis' next fight on the road back to
the heavyweight title when he meets the Londoner at The
Point, Dublin, on Sunday July 2.
Fortune is very short for a heavyweight at about 5ft Sins
tall, but has apparently been chosen because his physique
resembles that of Mike Tyson, whom Lewis hopes to meet in a
mega-fight somewhere down the line.
